How does cryptocurrency asset tracing work?
A plain-English account of what happens between a starting transaction and a set of findings you can act on.

Tracing begins with a confirmed starting point: a transaction, an address, or a document that references one. Without that, there is nothing to follow.
Following the movement
From the starting point, each onward transaction is examined. Value may split across many addresses, consolidate again, cross to another blockchain through a bridge, or arrive at an exchange.
Specialist analysis tools accelerate this work, but the investigative judgement about which branch matters is human.
Where the trail becomes useful
The most valuable outcome is usually not the last address in the chain but the first point at which assets touch a regulated service, because that creates a record held by an identifiable third party.
Where the trail ends
Some trails do end. Mixing services, privacy chains and off-chain transfers can break continuity. A credible report says so plainly rather than presenting a partial trail as a complete one.
